Originally known as an ‘ambrosia of the gods’, honey is now known to have high levels of anti-oxidants that are known for their anti-ageing and anti-inflammatory properties which have been noted to help assist the body fight off cancer causing agents. Tasmanian Leatherwood honey is knows to be 2-3 richer in antioxidants than other Australian honeys.
- Naturally Organic
Our Tasmanian Leatherwood Honey is naturally organic by virtue of the fact of where it is produced. Our honey is harvested on the remote western side of our island, Tasmania. In fact our location on the globe is at latitude 42 degrees South is shared only by the southern most New Zealand and Tierra del Fuego. At this latitude the circum polar winds whip up a constant westerly breeze known as the Roaring Forties. These winds bring with them heavy moisture laden air drawn off the Great Southern Ocean only to deposit most of it as rain on the western side of Tasmania watering the rainforest where Tasmanian Leatherwood honey produces its golden harvest.
- Unique to Tasmania
Leatherwood honey is the honey bees produce from the nectar of the Leatherwood plants’ flower. The Leatherwood plant (Eucryphia lucida) is endemic to Tasmania, thus you will only find true Tasmanian leatherwood honey that is produced in Tasmania.
- Distinctive taste
Some describe the taste of Leatherwood honey like its wilderness. We agree with this description, but also resonate with the International Slow Food Movements description below:
‘Leatherwood honey is slightly liquid with uniform crystallisation, a smooth creamy texture and an ochre-yellow colour. The perfume is intense with notes of balsamic scents, which develops quickly into clean fresh notes of citrus fruits and white flowers. The flavour is clean and fresh, very balsamic, with lightly spicy notes in its long finish. Overall, the sensation of eating this honey is very pleasurable: it is creamy, buttery, low in acidity and melts in the mouth’.
Further to the taste, at The Tasmanian Honey Company we have adopted a special low temperature preparation technique. In carefully managing the extraction of the honey from the combs and its cleaning we are able to preserve both the floral essences and the innate vitality of our honey, resulting in an aromatic and naturally organic food.
